In‐field evaporative protection for dryland wheat and lentil crops using polymers

چکیده
In semi-arid cropping regions where rainfall is variable, stored soil water important for reducing the impacts of dry periods; however, in-season evaporation limits yield potential. We tested productivity benefits protecting wheat and lentil crops from using inter-row polymer cover, when grown in southern Australia. For wheat, white polyvinyl chloride (PVCw) increased by 50% (561 kg/ha) 11% (408 decile 2 (2018) 3 (2019) seasonal respectively; lentil, increases were 20% (443 2019. A sprayable alginate 8% (310 kg/ha). Total use 2018 was reduced (17 mm) PVCw efficiency (WUE) significantly 7 to 11 kg/ha/mm, whereas 2019, WU greater (47 PVCw, but WUE equivalent control (~15 kg/ha/mm). Colour PVC modified light available crop canopy temperature, a highly reflective cover (albedo 0.44) (~487 future, formulations polymers applied within dryland enterprises are likely provide production advantages, although logistical viability application potential environmental implications may define impediments adoption.

Simulated yield and profitability of five potential crops for intensifying the dryland wheat-fallow production system
Greater precipitation use efficiency (PUE) and economic returns by increasing cropping frequency through the addition of summer crops to the dryland winter wheat-fallow (WF) cropping system have been reported in the semiarid Central Great Plains of USA. However, due to the highly variable nature of precipitation and uncertain water availability, selection of a crop with assured positive net ret...
متن کاملUsing the possibilities of some trap, catch and Brassicaceaen crops for controlling crenate broomrape a problem in lentil fields
Broomrapes are obligate root parasitic weeds and major constraint to many dicotyledoncrops especially in Mediterranean agricultural lands. Due to the fact that no single controlmeasure is able to control broomrapes in the field satisfactorily, integrated management isrecommended in general. The use of of trap crops or catch crops is an important strategy forcontrolling the weeds; and allelopath...
متن کاملAssessment of productive efficiency for irrigated and dryland wheat farming in Iran using Data Envelopment Analysis
Wheat is widely grown in Iran as a staple food; therefore, the government there encourages farmers to produce wheat (a common agricultural enterprise) by increasing farm productivity and efficiency. The study compares the efficiency of wheat production for dryland (low input) and irrigated (high input) systems across Iranian provinces by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The average techni...
متن کاملUptake coefficients for biosolids-amended dryland winter wheat.
The USEPA adapted a risk assessment approach in biosolids regulations that includes the use of an uptake coefficient (UC) (i.e., the ratio of plant concentration to quantity of element added) to determine limitations on selected elemental additions. The nature of the risk assessment requires UCs to be constants. Our hypothesis was that the UC for Cu, Fe, Mo, Ni, P, and Zn for biosolids-amended ...
متن کاملSeasonal mycorrhizal colonization of winter wheat and its effect on wheat growth under dryland field conditions
A field experiment was conducted to determine the seasonal patterns of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) in a dryland winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) system and to determine wheat growth and P uptake responses to inoculation with mycorrhizal fungus. Broadcast-incorporated treatments included (1) no inoculation with mycorrhizal fungus, with and without P fertilizer, and (2) mycorrhizal fungal inocu...
